RESEARCH IN THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERNAL MEDICINE

Scholarship and discovery are integral to the field of Internal Medicine. At UC Davis, the Department of Internal Medicine is committed to high quality scholarship across the spectrum of discovery, integration, application, and dissemination. The Department boasts over 120 research faculty; in 2006 they collectively published over several hundred research papers and brought in $zzz in grant funds. Current strengths include vascular biology, inflammation, diabetes, autoimmune disease, cancer therapeutics, and health services research.

The UCD Health System is strategically committed to developing research programs in cancer, vascular medicine, neuroscience, and infectious disease. The Department's Research Strategic Plan aligns with these commitments. In the first phase (2005-2007), the Department invested significant resources in the area of vascular health and disease, resulting in the recruitment of two exceptional junior faculty (Jennifer Lee, MD and Eliza Tong, MD) and the creation of the Vascular Health and Disease Interdisciplinary Working Group (IWG). An additional IWG has been established in Liver and Metabolism. Currently, the Department is partnering with others in the Health System to strengthen the quantitative infrastructure for research. In the coming months, several new initiatives will be considered.
